The Bit Buckets is a Tucson community high school STEM team that competes in robotics competitions and other technical challenges.

Our mission:

Our Mission is to motivate students with opportunities to solve realistic engineering problems.

Our vision:

We envision a world where students are motivated to build productive relationships while responsibly applying knowledge through respect, leadership, and teamwork.

In 2010-11 BASIS Tucson students formed a VEX robotics team and raised enough funds to purchase a kit of parts but did not build the robot in time to compete.

In 2011-12 BASIS Tucson Bit Buckets was formed and participated in VEX Robotics (2nd place, Southern Arizona Robotics Challenge) and as a rookie team in the First Robotics Competition we won the Rookies All-Star award sponsored by NASA at the 2012 Utah Regional.  We built our robot in the Physics Factory space at the Tucson Boys and Girls Club.

In 2012-13 we organized as an independently-run community team after BASIS Tucson North decided our project was larger in scope than they could support.  Our team members decided unanimously to continue and the team held meetings at the home of two of our mentors.

In 2013-2014 we started to build at Xerocraft Hackerspace a local makerspace in the oldest warehouse in Tucson. They have a great machine shop and is full of lovely people!

In 2014-2015 for the first time since our first year we went to world Championships by winning the Arizona regional with our laser cut wooden robot. At Championships we did well and got seeded 12th with a qualifying score of 146.90.

In 2015-2016 we went to the Arizona North and Central Regionals- placing well Finals at both regionals, eventually ending up at Championships. Unfortunately, we did poorly at Championships, as we did not get selected in our division.

In 2016-2017 we went to the Arizona North Regional and the Colorado Regional, making it past alliance selection at both, and into the semi-finals in Colorado; however, we did not make it to Championships.

We now enjoy a partnership with City High School in downtown Tucson, which promotes a hands-on learning experience that engages students directly with their community. City High graciously welcomes other schools to our team and we have had students from Tucson High, BASIS Tucson North, University High, and Catalina Foothills. Downtown Tucson has been good to our team, while our FRC team builds at Xerocraft Hackerspace and our Vex team builds at CoLab Workspace.
