The FIRST Robotics Competition is, according to FIRST, “a unique varsity sport of the mind designed to help high-school-aged young people discover how interesting and rewarding the life of engineers and researchers can be.”

FIRST is an acronym: For Inspiration and Recognition of Science and Technology. Founded in 1989 by Dean Kamen, FIRST is a non-profit organization dedicated to promoting engineering and science throughout the youth of today. Over 130,000 students work with 37,000 adult mentors to build 10,000 robots, and the numbers are growing every year.

FIRST has different programs designed for students from ages 6-18.
